How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the area to be turfed and select the unit beside each lawn and roll dimension.
  2. Enter an allowance for trimming, joins, or damaged material appropriate to the layout.
  3. Copy the delivered roll dimensions and price from your supplier.

Formula and method

Required coverage = lawn area Γ— (1 + waste/100). Rolls = round up(required coverage Γ· area per roll). Cost = whole rolls Γ— price per roll.

For the assumptions behind these results, read the explanation below. You can also explore Grass Seed and Fertilizer.

A worked example

A 50 mΒ² lawn plus 10% extra requires 55 mΒ² of turf. Each 2 m by 0.5 m roll covers 1 mΒ², so 55 rolls cost 330 at 6 per roll.

Coverage and purchase quantity are different

The lawn itself has one measured area. An allowance increases the material available for cutting pieces around edges, making joints, and accommodating other losses. Roll count is calculated from that increased coverage and rounded upward to a whole number. The purchased area can therefore be slightly larger again.

Choose the unit beside each measurement to match your tape or supplier’s label. For example, a lawn can be measured in meters while a roll width is entered as 50 cm, or a lawn can use feet while roll width uses 18 inches. Compatible units are converted automatically before areas are calculated. Always check that each displayed unit matches the number entered.

Use the plan to choose an allowance

A rectangle with long straight edges generally has fewer awkward cuts than a narrow or curved lawn. Trees, islands, and small corners can leave pieces that are difficult to reuse. Choose the allowance from the actual plan and discuss practical delivery units with the supplier. The default is an example, not a promise that every job will use that amount.

This estimate covers turf rolls only. Soil preparation, grading, delivery, installation labor, equipment, and irrigation costs are separate. If sod is priced per square meter or square foot, multiply that price by the area of one roll before entering a roll price. Inspect the complete calculated order rather than purchasing only the unadjusted lawn area.

Frequently asked questions

Does the cost include spare rolls?

Yes. It uses the rounded whole-roll quantity after applying the allowance.

What if my supplier sells pallets?

Use the coverage per pallet as the roll-area equivalent, or divide the roll count by rolls per pallet and round up separately.
