How to use this calculator

  1. Enter current weight in kilograms or pounds and choose the most suitable life-stage estimate.
  2. Read the metabolizable energy on the food label and select the matching energy-density unit.
  3. Enter meal frequency. Include treats and other food when comparing the estimate with the dog’s total intake.

Formula and method

RER = 70 Γ— weight(kg)^0.75; daily energy = RER Γ— factor; food(g) = daily energy Γ· kcal per 100 g Γ— 100.

A worked example

For a 20 kg neutered adult, RER is about 662 kcal/day and the starting daily estimate is about 1,059 kcal. At 360 kcal per 100 g, this corresponds to roughly 294 g daily, split into two 147 g meals.

Resting energy and daily energy are different

Resting energy requirement estimates the energy used for basic functions. A life-stage multiplier adjusts that baseline to create a starting estimate for maintenance or growth. The exponent means requirements do not rise in a simple one-to-one relationship with body weight. Doubling weight does not double the estimate.

A food portion only follows after the energy density is known. Foods with different moisture or fat contents can provide very different calories per gram. Choose the matching energy-density unit for the food label. If the label gives only calories per cup, obtain the cup’s gram weight rather than guessing.

Use the estimate as a starting point

Individual needs vary with body condition, activity, environment, and health. Track both body weight and body condition over time, and adjust a feeding plan with veterinary guidance when necessary. The custom factor supports an established individualized plan; it is not a way to diagnose a nutritional problem.

The portion assumes the entire daily energy allowance comes from this food. Treats, chews, table food, and supplements that contain calories reduce the remaining allowance. This tool does not assess whether a diet is complete and balanced or appropriate for a particular medical condition.

Frequently asked questions

Are food calories the same as kcal?

Food-label Calories ordinarily mean kilocalories, abbreviated kcal. Enter the label’s energy value using the stated per-100-gram basis.

Should I use ideal weight?

This general maintenance estimate uses the entered weight. Weight-loss, weight-gain, pregnancy, or illness plans require individualized guidance; ask your veterinary team which weight and factor to use.

Why does another calculator give a different portion?

Different multipliers, energy densities, and rounding can change the answer. Compare the assumptions and keep a record of the amount that maintains healthy condition.
